Brookings High student wins at international science competition

by Perry Miller
A Brookings High School student wins a major award at an
international science competition.
Junior Zarin Rahman took first place in the Behavioral and Social
Sciences category at the International Science and Engineering
Fair held recently in Phoenix.
There were some 1600 students taking part.
Rahman won with a study on the ways stress affects the mood,
memory and learning in adolescents.
As a category grand champion, Rahman takes home some $8000.
Plus, $1000 goes to Brookings High and $1000 goes to the SDSU
Science Fair.
She also won special awards including $2500 from the National
Institutes of Health.  And, if she chooses to use it, a scholarship
to Arizona State University worth about $48,000.
It's believed that Rahman is the first South Dakotan to win one
of the major category awards at the International Fair.
We're going to talk to Zarin Rahman later; she's in the middle of
finals this week.
