A Brookings man is killed in a Friday morning accident on Interstate 29
near Baltic.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says 43-year-old David Michael
Zerfas was driving southbound about 6:20 a.m. about a mile north of the
Baltic exit when the car went out of control and crossed a median into the
northbound lane. Zerfas collided with a car driven by 35-year-old Mark
Jason Misar of Madison. Zerfas was killed, Misar was not injured.
Authorities say an initial investigation shows Zerfas may have swerved to
avoid the remains of a deer in the roadway.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
Zerfas was a civilian technician and a member of the 114th Air Wing of the
South Dakota Air National Guard of Sioux Falls. He was also president of
the Brookings Ice Skating Association.
