A Brookings cab driver uses pepper spray on a rider who tried to choke
him.

Brookings police were called at about 2:15 this morning by a cab
driver who said he had been assaulted.  Lt. Derrick Powers says the
driver was giving several individuals a ride when one of them tried to
smoke a cigarette, was told he couldn't, and became upset.

That rider put his arm around the driver's neck and tried to choke him.
That's when the driver used the pepper spray.

When police arrived, the man who had been sprayed was still in the
area and was arrested for simple assault.  That 23-year-old Brookings
resident had his eyes flushed with water but required no other medical
treatment.

The 35-year-old cab driver was not hurt.
