Brookings man and his dog injured in pit bull attack

by Perry Miller

A Brookings man and his dog are both injured in a Thursday afternoon
attack by another dog.

Police Lt. Derrick Powers says it happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. A mail
carrier delivering mail on the 100 block of 17th Avenue South reports that two
pit bulls got out a screen door and the dogs went after him. He was
able to fend them off and the dogs ran away.

Some people and their family dog were out in their yard on the 1600 block
of Olwein when one of the loose pit bulls attacked their dog. The owner of
the dog was able to get the pit bull to let go but suffered some injuries in
the process, including bites on the leg and finger. The bite on the leg was
fairly serious.  The dog that was attacked suffered extensive injuries and was
taken to the vet and is back home today.

The pit bulls were captured by animal control. Their owner is being charged
with dogs running at large, public nuisance and an expired vaccination.

The dogs will be quarantined  for 10 days and will be declared vicious
