Ellsworth 70th Anniversary

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Ellsworth Air Force Base is celebrating its 70th anniversary and the milestone has many reflecting on the base's past and its future.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz was at the base on Saturday to celebrate the anniversary.

Schwartz told a crowd of about 600 that the Air Force faces budget cuts over the next few years and the best way to meet the cuts would be to close some bases around the country. He says Ellsworth and every other base would be evaluated by the quality of facilities and amount of community support they receive.

South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard says the technological advances at Ellsworth would help the base if it faces possible closure.
