SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The two South Dakota National Guard
units in Iraq aren't coming home early, despite the end of U.S.
combat operations in that country.
While some American units are coming home, South Dakota Guard
commander Tim Reisch says that the 189th Aviation Regiment and
139th Brigade Support Battalion will stay in the Middle East for the
remainder of their yearlong deployments. The two units are now in
Kuwait.
The Rapid City-based 189th was activated in May. The
Brookings-based 139th was activated in June.
Nearly 3,500 South Dakota guardsmen have served in the nearly
nine-year war in Iraq.
