PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota House has approved a
measure that would change some provisions of a year-old abortion
law that requires women seeking abortions to first get counseling
at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions.
The law passed a year ago requires women to wait 72 hours and
undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers before getting
abortions.
But Planned Parenthood has filed a lawsuit that argues the law
is an unconstitutional burden on a woman's right to an abortion,
and a federal judge has suspended most of that law from taking
effect until the court challenge is decided.
The House voted 56-12 Monday to pass a bill that specifies
exactly what an abortion clinic doctor must discuss with a woman
and requires that counselors at pregnancy help centers be licensed.
