Jim Hornby passes away


Retired Brookings Police Captain Jim Hornby passes away.  Hornby died 
suddenly Sunday morning.

The 66-year-old Hornby was a longtime member of the Brookings police 
force and was heavily involved in the community.

Hornby joined the police force in 1970 and retired in 2001. He was 
instrumental in starting Safety Town; DARE; and started and led the 
SWAT team and the Brookings Police Reserves. 

Hornby was a board member of the South Dakota Law Enforcement Torch 
Run and the South Dakota Special Olympics. He was currently serving as 
president of the South Dakota Peace Officer's Association; he was a member 
of South Dakota Rolling Thunder, Chapter 2; he was a founding member of the 
Brookings Police Department Foundation and a member of Brookings Area 
Crime Stoppers.

The funeral service is set for Friday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. at First Lutheran 
Church in Brookings.

Memorials may be directed to the South Dakota Special Olympics.
