SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Education officials in South Dakota say
the state's Head Start programs are safe despite some new
administration rules for the federal program.
Officials with the Sioux Falls School District and other area
providers say they are not worried about heightened scrutiny.
Under the new rules announced by President Barack Obama last
month, lower-performing Head Start programs that fail to meet a new
set of benchmarks will be required to compete for federal funding.
Sioux Falls School District early childhood coordinator Val
Peters says the program earned a 99.8 percent score on its latest
site review, and the program was rated better than the national
average in nine of 10 areas.
Most Head Start programs are operated by nonprofit groups, and
officials say they're doing well.
