Boys JV
The Rangers defeated the Aberdeen Cougars 5-1 at Odde Ice Center on Saturday. Aberdeen scored an early power play goal but Joe Sullivan netted an unassisted, short handed goal near the end of the first period to tie the game. The Rangers scored a pair of goals in the second, one Trevor Puetz on a power play assisted by Caleb Bullington, and Garret Rounds added an unassisted goal. Puetz scored his second goal early in the third with Patrick Chapin and Bullington assisting folled by an unassisted Isaac Ahmed goal just 14 seconds later. Tyler Schulte saved 12 of the Cougars' 13 shots on goal for the Rangers.
The Ranger Boys JV are first in league and will travel to Oahe on Sunday to play their final league game against the second seeded Oahe Capitals.
Girls JV
The Rangers fell 4-3 in overtime play to the Oahe Capitals last Saturday. Oahe scored early taking a 2-0 lead over the Rangers until Jordyn Peterson put one in the net late in the first period. In the second, it was Peterson again off a Carlie Kruse assist to tie it up. At 11:40 in the second, the Rangers gave up a power play goal to give Oahe a 1 goal lead. The Rangers tied it up in the third with a power play goal. Only 27 seconds into the overtime period, the Capitals scored the game winning goal. Lexy Lynn had 20 saves in goal for the Rangers.
Pee Wee A
The Brookings PeeWee A team finished in 6th place at the SDAHA State Tournament in Rapid City. The Rangers opened play on Friday with a 5-2 loss to Watertown. Joe Bertolini put Brookings ahead in the 1st period with a goal assisted by Ryan Miley. The Lakers then reeled off 4 straight goals before Matthew Chapin pulled the Rangers to within 2. A Watertown empty net goal completed the scoring. Royal Grindeland had 23 saves for Brookings. On Saturday, the Rangers rebounded with a 4-1 win over Aberdeen. Chapin (3) and Dalton Rittershaus were goal scorers, with Cody Niklason, Ryan Miley and Jordan Vlaminck contributing assists. The Rangers defense held the Cougars to 9 shots on goal for the game. On Sunday, Brookings dropped a 6-5 decision to Mitchell in the Consolation Championship. Alex Miley had 2 goals and an assist to lead the Rangers attack, with Chapin adding 2 goals and Carter Krogman a goal and an assist. Grindeland had 21 saves for the Rangers, who outshot the Marlins 46-27. Brookings completed their season with a record of 19 wins, 10 losses and 1 overtime loss.
Squirt 1
The Ranger Squirt 1 team hosted the “A” division of the 2012 Dakota Premier Classic hockey tournament this past weekend at the Larson Ice Center.
In what turned out to be one of the weekend’s most exciting contests, Friday night’s first round game found the Rangers taking on the Marshall Tigers. After falling behind 2-0 midway through the second period a Kaden Vugteveen goal, off an assist from Sajen Perry, followed by an unassisted Austin Lesnar score tied the game at two. A late Tiger goal sent the game to the third period with the Rangers down a goal. Marshall scored an early third period goal to open a two goal lead. However, the duo of Sajen Perry and Sean Sullivan provided two third period Ranger goals to send the game into overtime. Perry scored the first off an assist from Sullivan. Perry then returned the favor by assisting Sullivan on the game tying score. The Tigers managed to score the game-winning goal forty seconds into the overtime period sending the Rangers to the consolation bracket.
Saturday’s game pitted the Rangers against a tough Sioux Falls East squad. In a back and forth offensive contest the Flyers managed to outscore the Rangers 11 – 6. Ranger goals were scored by Austin Lesnar (2), Sean Sullivan (2), Jordan Svododny and Joel Syrstad. Assists were credited to Syrstad (2) and Sajen Perry.
In the final game of the weekend, and of the Squirt’s season, the Rangers faced the Yankton Miracle. The first period ended with the home team leading 3 – 2. From there it was all Rangers as the game finished with the Rangers on top 10 – 2. Joel Syrstad earned the hat trick by scoring three goals. Other Ranger goals were scored by Cayden Jacobsma (2), Austin Lesnar (2), Carter Shoup, Luc Bouchard, and Jackson Drew. Assists were recorded by Jordan Svobodny (2), Shoup (2), Alex Kuck, Alec Nielson, Dylan Park and Syrstad.
Squirt 2
The Ranger Squirt 2 team kicked off their Dakota Premier Classic tournament in a match against the Yankton Miracle Friday night winning 6-3. The Rangers took a 3-2 lead in the first period with goals scored by Kane Kurtenbach, Max Kjelden, and Jamison Honkomp. Zach Weber earned a hat trick scoring the final 3 goals in the game with assists from Honkomp and Alec Rice.
In Saturday's game, the Rangers were shut out by Windom losing 6-0 in the semi final round of tournament play. Ranger goalie Phillip Kuechenmeister saved 15 in the game. Windom went on to win 1st place in the tournament.
On Sunday, the Rangers took the third place trophy in a 8-5 win over the Oahe Capitals. Charlie Marshall lit the lamp to start the Rangers' scoring efforts with an assist from Honkomp. In the second period, Avry Mangan scored first assisted by Weber followed by a pair of goals scored by Honkomp with assists credited to Weber (2) for the play maker and Trevor Pederson. Brenden Naylor then assisted a Weber goal to end the second period with a score of 5-4. In the third, Weber scored a pair of back to back goals and Honkomp found the back of the net late in the period with both earning hat tricks in the game.
The Squirt 2 team hosts Alexandria this Saturday at 6:00 PM for their final game of the season.
Girls U12
The Ranger Girls U12 hosted the Mitchell Marlins on Sunday in their final game of the season. The Rangers took a 3-1 lead in the first period with goals scored by Jordyn Peterson (2) and Lauren Moody with assists going to Moody, Allysen Zerfas, and Bethany Rennich. In the second, Rennich found the back of the net, Peterson scored her third goal of the game earning a hat trick, and Carlie Kruse also scored for the Rangers. Zerfas scored in the third period off an assist from Kalani Perry and Sarah Rounds put in the final goal of the game to give the Rangers an 8-3 win over the Marlins. Goaltender Karlee Krogman made 14 saves in the game. The Rangers ended a perfect season with an undefeated record in Girls U12 division.
