WEDNESDAY, JULY 31:

STATE LEGION…Groton outlasted a stubborn Vermillion squad 9-8 Tuesday in the state B American Legion championship game in Webster.
   Tourney MVP Tanner Anderson of Vermillion had two hits, as did teammates Jayce Huska and Collin Bertram.
Groton received two hits apiece from Drew Planteen, Matt Thorson and Mason Madsen.
   The state championship is Groton’s ninth in the sport and allowed the squad to defend its title from last year.

STATE A LEGION…The state A American Legion baseball tourney starts Wednesday in Rapid City.
   Pairings for the first day have Watertown vs. Spearfish at 10 a.m., followed by the Aberdeen and Pierre game. The evening session begins at 5 p.m., with Mitchell tangling with Sioux Falls West, followed by Brandon Valley vs. Rapid City Post 22, the host team.
   This season, the State B Legion champion will not play in the State A tourney. Sioux Falls West beat Huron 15-5 in a wild card game and a state berth for that final open spot.

BOMBERS BLACK…The Brookings Bombers Black will move into state tournament play Friday through Sunday in Mitchell.
   Brookings will meet Pierre at noon, and Sioux Falls Post 307 Black at 7:30pm Friday – both games at Drake Field.
   Saturday, Brookings plays Mitchell Black at 3:30 at Cadwell Park.  Games for placing are Sunday, with the title game at 3:00pm.

BOMBERS MAROON, GRAY…The Brookings Bombers Maroon and Gray teams have their state tournament Friday through Sunday in Watertown.  Games for placings are Sunday.  Their pool matchups go like this:

SDSU FB…South Dakota State is picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference this fall – that’s from the league coaches, media, and sports information directors.
   Head coach John Stiegelmeier’s excited to have quarterback Austin Sumner, running back Zach Zenner, and several offensive linemen back.  97627   :13   “and become playmakers”.
   Stiegelmeier says there are a couple of voids at linebacker, but overall, he’s excited about the defense.  97628   :23   “of excitement there”.

JACKS TICKETS… Single-game tickets for all six South Dakota State home football games during the 2013 season will go on sale to the general public Thursday morning (Aug. 1) at the Jackrabbit Ticket Office.
   The Jackrabbit Ticket Office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Orders also can be placed online at JackrabbitTickets.com or by calling 1-866-GO JACKS.

ZONE SWIM…The Brookings Swim Club will send some athletes to this weekend’s zone meet in Topeka, Kansas.
   Head coach Rusty Bernstein says the event features top swimmers from the Upper Midwestern states.  97630   :41   “the state meet”.
   Several swimmers set personal marks during last weekend’s state meet, and Bernstein would like to see those efforts repeated in Topeka.  97631   :18   “row like that”.

SD MINES AD…South Dakota Mines has started its search for a new athletic director.
   The school officially advertised the opening last Tuesday and will go through the normal process of selecting a new athletic director in the next few weeks. A search committee has been formed and applications will begin to be reviewed on Aug. 6, with the hope that candidates will be on campus by the middle of the month for interviews.
   The new A-D will succeed Dick Kaiser, who became Mines athletic director in 2009, and was instrumental in the last four years of the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, as well as finding conferences for the football and men’s soccer programs (Great Northwest Athletic Conference, starting 2013 for soccer, 2014 for football).
   Up next for the new athletic director will be finding conferences for men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, track and field and golf.

ABERDEEN WINGS COACHES…The Aberdeen Wings have added two men to its hockey operations staff for the 2013-2014 season.
   Francis Anzalone is now the associate head coach/director of player personnel, and Mike Grattan has been named head scout/director of player development.
   Anzalone and Grattan worked together for parts of four seasons with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League.
   The Wings will open its North American Hockey League season Sept. 27 at Brookings, and then host Brookings at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Odde Ice Center.
   Workers at the Wings’ home at the Brown County Fairgrounds have been adding on to their home arena. It will feature added suites, a new state-of-the art locker room, weight training facility, staff offices, player’s lounge and both an equipment and medical room.
   Anzalone joins the Wings after spending four seasons on both the coaching and scouting staffs of the RoughRiders. Prior to his time with Cedar Rapids, Anzalone coached at the Bantam and Midget AAA levels for the former Pittsburgh Junior Penguins hockey program. The Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., native is the son of long-time NCAA and professional hockey coach Frank Anzalone, who presently works for the NHL's Calgary Flames.
   Grattan spent two seasons as a regional scout for the RoughRiders. He played two seasons of junior 'A' and 'B' hockey in the U.S. and Canada before graduating from Hamilton College in 2001.

MILLER W/GRIZZLIES… Mike Miller says one of his first calls after the Miami Heat decided to amnesty him was to the Memphis Grizzlies' chief executive officer.
   The guard said he and Jason Levien had the same idea — his return to Memphis would a perfect fit.
   The Grizzlies announced Tuesday morning that they had signed the best 3-point shooter in franchise history as part of their efforts to improve a team coming off its first Western Conference final.
   Memphis did not disclose details of the contract.
   Miller was introduced at a midday news conference at the FedExForum, where fans and backers joined in welcoming him back to town. Miller drew applause from backers as he walked out with new head coach Dave Joerger and a standing ovation after the event.

VIKINGS…The Minnesota Vikings’ training camp is underway in Mankato.
   Harrison Smith is back after a strong rookie season at safety.  Head coach Leslie Frasier says Smith needs to temper his aggressive play.  97632   :19   “this offseason”.
   Frazier says the team may have to make adjustments to its game plan depending on how rookie cornerback Xavier Rhodes and cornerback Josh Robinson handle the new situation. 97633   :21   “next few weeks”.
   Frazier says veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams has handled the drafting of defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd very well.   97634   :24   “understands it”.

GFP COMMISSION…The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission will be holding its August meeting at the Watertown Events Center Thursday and Friday.
   The commission will be finalizing the 2013 Duck and Goose Hunting Seasons as well as Big Game Depredation and State Game Bird Refuge Proposals.
   The commission will also be proposing the 2014 Mountain Lion Hunting Season.
