BANDITS…Corey Roach laced three hits and drove in five runs as the Brookings Bandits defeated Brandon Valley 12-2 in seven innings Tuesday in American Legion baseball.
Carter Mahlum had three hits and drove in three runs for Brookings, while Carter Roach and Bryce McMacken each had two hits.
Jared Tschetter threw six innings of four-hit baseball for the win, walking four and striking out four. The first of five Brandon pitchers, Levi McKercher, took the loss.
Brookings scored eleven runs in the third through fifth innings to break open the game.
The Bandits are at the Gopher Classic this weekend.
FRIEND OF BASEBALL…The Brookings Friends of Baseball has presented their 2014 Friend of Baseball award to Carol Holm, and the late Dave Holm.
Dave was a veteran umpire who worked numerous Brookings games over the years. Carol was in the stands for many of those supporting the Brookings teams, and continues to do so.
BOMBERS MAROON…The Brookings Bombers Maroon got off to a shaky start, but finished strong Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep of Yankton.
Trevor Berreth had four hits and drove in six runs in an 18-5, five-inning win in the nightcap. The bottom four hitters in the Bombers order reached base 13 times out of 16 plate appearances – scoring 12 of the runs. The Bombers scored eight runs in the fourth – four of those walked in by Yankton pitchers. Sean Sullivan had a two-run double and Jay Wilber an RBI double. Sullivan threw two and one-third innings of three-hit baseball for the win.
Yankton led the opener 5-1 after one inning, but Brookings chipped away for an 11-9 win. Cody Niklason threw four innings of two-hit relief to earn the win – he struck out one and did not walk a batter. Drew Cole was the starter. Tyler Kreutner had three hits and scored five runs.
LANCERS BASEBALL SIGN… Connor Fransen, a 6-4 right-handed pitcher from Watertown, has signed with Mount Marty College.
Fransen was an honorable mention all-state selection this past spring, going 1-1 with a 2.24 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 25 innings. Last summer, he went 8-2 (2.76 ERA) for the Watertown American Legion program, striking out 58 batters in 68 innings.
WAY HONORED…Mitchell native Caitlin Way has been nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year by the Big 12 Conference.
Way, who finished her collegiate career at Oklahoma State in May, was one of two female athletes chosen to represent the Big 12. University of Texas volleyball player Bailey Webster was the conference's second nominee.
The Woman of the Year award recognizes senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.
The 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year winner, as well as the top 10 honorees and the nine finalists from Divisions I, II and III, will be honored and announced at a dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 19.
During her career, Way was a five-time all-Big 12 performer. She qualified for the NCAA regional meet for three consecutive years and is second all-time in the weight throw for the Cowboys and third all-time in the hammer throw.
SDGA MATCH PLAY…The South Dakota Golf Association’s match play championships begin Thursday with qualifying rounds at Red Rock near Rapid City.
Matches begin Friday, with the title match early next week.
Area players entered include Brian Berkenhoff, Grant Smith, and Adolph Shepardson of Brookings, and Drew Trautman of Clear Lake.
Women’s tournament entrants include Kali Trautman of Clear Lake.
