Golf: Brookings @ Brandon Valley Invitational
LEGION REGION…Host Dickinson will play Omaha Pi Midwest at noon, CT, for a berth in the Central Plains Regional American Legion baseball tournament title game. The winner will play defending national champion Eden Prairie later in the day for the championship.
It’s the third time Dickinson has hosted the tournament – the previous two times, the tourney champion has gone on to win the national title.
Dickinson defeated Eden Prairie 6-5 in ten innings Sunday to stay alive in the tournament. Omaha scored ten runs in each of the third, and seventh, innings to eliminate Edina 25-1 Sunday.

Omaha eliminated Brookings Saturday night 12-5 in a game that was delayed twice by rain – the second time for about two hours. Kevin Connolly blasted a home and drove in five runs for Omaha. Riley Bullington led the Bandits with four hits. Konner Beste, Matt Pesja and Thomas McMacken each had two. Corey Roach started, allowing ten runs on nine hits, two strikeouts and two walks over four innings. Skyler Cary finished the game. The Bandits end the season at 43-12.
STATE “A” AMATEUR… Brandon Valley rallied with a six-run seventh inning to beat Renner 7-6 Sunday in the Class A state amateur baseball championship game at Mitchell.
Yankton pickup Derrik Nelson didn’t allow a run in 4 2/3 innings. He gave up two hits and three walks while striking out one, and earned the win.
Zack Danelson led Brandon with two hits, two stolen bases, one run and one RBI. Jacob Pole also had two hits, one run and one RBI. Renner had four hitters with multiple-hit games. Brian McGuire and Matt Gulliano each had three hits while Grant Hieb and Brian Nikkel both added two. Danelson was named the tourney MVP. Andy Turbak of Castlewood won the “Big Stick” award.
STATE “B” AMATEUR…The Parkston Mudcats won the state “B” amateur baseball title Sunday, defeating Crofton, NE 4-3 in 13 innings.
Brady Nolz was named tournament MVP - Nolz appeared in five games during the entire state tournament, working 33.1 innings and fanning 27 batters. In the last two days of the tourney, he threw 17 innings and 267 pitches in a roughly 20-hour span.
Trevor Fruedenthal had four hits for the Mudcats, while Spencer Fruedenthal had three. Scott Donner had three hits for Crofton, and won the Class B tournament batting title with a .538 average.
TEENER BASEBALL…Warner scored two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to defeat Elkton 7-6 Sunday to win the state VFW Teener baseball title in Platte.
Dustin Northrop earned the win – Chance Torrence had two hits for Warner. For Elkton, Jordan Beck had two hits. Heath Schindler took the loss.
In other Sunday games, Corsica defeated Flandreau 5-1 for third place…and Mt. Vernon defeated Alcester-Hudson 5-1 for fifth place.
Saturday, in consolation round play, Alcester-Hudson defeated Kimball-White Lake 16-4 and Mt. Vernon over Platte 16-4. Championship round scores had Warner over Corsica 12-2 and Elkton over Flandreau 9-8 in nine innings.
Opening round scores had Warner over Alcester-Hudson 12-3, Corsica over Kimball- White Lake 14-4,
Elkton over Mt. Vernon 10-2 and Flandreau over Platte 10-2.
LITTLE LEAGUE…Kearney, NE will make its first-ever trip to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA, after defeating Canyon Lake of Rapid City Saturday in the Midwest Regional final in Indianapolis.
Kearney's Blake Quintana launched a two-run home run off of Canyon Lake starter Cooper Bowman in the third inning, which proved to be the winning hit. The Nebraska team would add four more runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.
SDGA MEN’S GOLF…Brandon Sigmund rallied to win the SDGA Men’s Stroke Play golf title Sunday in Aberdeen.
After trailing by six shots after the opening round, Sigmund cut the margin to one going into Sunday’s final round. Sigmund’s chip-in for eagle on the final hole gave him the lead – first-round leader Ryan Tjeerdsma missed an eagle putt that would have given him the win.
Chris Long was ten shots out at 221 – Scott Holm of Brookings closed at 224. Drew Trautman of Clear Lake finished at 232, Matt Erickson of Dell Rapids at 235, Brian Berkenhoff of Brookings at 244, Brian Burch of Lake Norden at 253, Jeff Schwebach of Dell Rapids at 259 and Adolph Shepardson of Brookings at 299.

Ben Irlbeck was named the 2012 Players Cup winner. The award is given to the top point-earner in the Two-Man, Match Play, and Men's Amateur Championships. Irlbeck tied for eighth in the Two-Man and won the Match Play Championship. He and Ryan Tjeerdsma were co-runners-up in the Men's Amateur.
SDGA WOMEN’S GOLF… Kim Kaufman of Clark capped off a decorated season with a successful defense of her Women's Amateur Championship title. Kaufman fired rounds of 70-71-70 for a three-day total of 5-under-par 211 at Brookings Country Club this weekend to win by 14 strokes. Maggie Murphy of Sioux Falls was the runner-up at 225. Karla Murra finished in third place at 231. Morgan Fitts of Brookings was fourth at 232. Brittany Hanten closed at 236, with Dani Selberg at 243.
Lauren Fitts of Brookings won the first flight at 244. Kali Trautman won the second flight at 251.
Jenny Coluccio was named the 2012 Players Cup winner. The Players Cup is awarded to the top point-earner in the Two-Woman, Match Play, and Women's Amateur Championships.
SENIOR WOMEN’S GOLF… Patty Coddington of Sioux Falls shot 85 on Saturday to outlast Colette Quam of Aberdeen and win the Women’s Senior Championship by one stroke. Coddington, who led by three after the first round, shot 166 for the tournament.
The win was Coddington’s second consecutive Women’s Senior Championship victory as well as her second SDGA title of the season after winning the Senior Husband-Wife at Arrowhead in June. Jeri Krsnak finished third at 174. Janet Boyum won the second flight at 182.
