BHS FB…Caleb Vig ran for a touchdown and threw for three more – two to Jon Lehman – as Brookings defeated Huron 31-14 Saturday night in the football season opener.
   Mike Daniel also caught a scoring pass and ran for 80 of the Bobcats’ 237 rushing yards.  Dayton Bender, who ran for 26 yards, also scored on a 17-yard run.
   Lucas Morrison ran for both Tiger touchdowns.  He finished with 64 rushing yards.
   Vig was 9-for-19 passing for 163 yards in the game.

SDSU VB…South Dakota State dominated the second and third sets of Saturday’s finale against Valparaiso at the Hawkeye Challenge, but the Crusaders fought just hard enough to win the first, fourth and fifth sets to secure the 3-2 win by the set scores of 25-23, 15-25, 16-25, 25-18 and 15-8. Margit Hansing led the SDSU offense with a career-high 15 kills and added a career-high 12 digs for her first-career double-double. Kelli Fiegen added 13 kills and hit .571 (13-1-21) in the loss. Shay Birath led all players with 24 digs.
   SDSU defeated Chicago State 25-7, 25-14 and 25-13.  Redshirt freshman Wagner Larson not only recorded her first-career kill in the match, she also led the Jackrabbits with 12 kills, adding four block assists and a service ace. Kaitlin Klingemann and Jocelyn Leichner both added eight kills for the Jacks
   Iowa got by the Jackrabbits 27-25, 20-25, 26-24 and 25-22. Kelly Fiegen led the Jackrabbits, and tied for match-high honors with 16 kills, and added a match-high five block assists. Shay Birath led the defense with a match-high 19 digs.
   SDSU swept Southeast Missouri State in the opener. Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbit offense with 10 kills, adding four block assists and a pair of solo blocks. Hansing finished with nine kills and Kelly Herrmann eight kills in the win. Herrmann also pitched in with 10 digs. Shay Birath led the defense with 17 digs, while Palmer chipped in with four digs to go with two service aces in her collegiate debut. Lexi Fowler and Howard split the setting duties. Fowler finished with a team-high 16, while Howard debuted with 10 assists, four block assists and a solo block.
   Fiegen was named to the All-Tournament team.

SDSU SOCCER…The South Dakota State women's soccer team was shutout by Georgia 5-0 in its Kansas Invitational finale on Sunday morning...
   SDSU entered with a 1-1-1 record by virtue of its 0-0 (2 OT) tie versus UNLV on Friday. Georgia dropped its invitational opener 1-0 to host Kansas.
   It took only a few minutes to change the fortunes of the Bulldogs, as Georgia scored 210 seconds into the game. The goal scored on a follow off of a saved header by SDSU’S Elisa Stamatakis.
   Diana Potterveld led the team with two shots, while Darci Miller, Christa Nyblom and Hannah Phillips each registered one shot on goal.
   Stamatakis made three saves in 60 minutes of play.

BHS TENNIS…Brookings defeated Mitchell 8-1 Saturday in play at the Jim Holwerda girls’ tennis jamboree in Brookings.
   Lydia Lucchesi, Emma Lucchesi, Brenna Langland, Yixuan He, Laurelle Anderson and Beth Hildebrandt swept the singles matches, and the Bobcats won at the second and third flights of doubles.
   Aberdeen Roncalli defeated the Bobcats 7-2.  Hildebrandt won her singles match, and Hildebrandt and He won at third flight doubles.
   Friday, Aberdeen Central swept the Bobcats 9-0. 
   The Bobcats did defeat Marshall 5-4, as Langland, He and Hildebrandt won in singles play.  Brookings edged Yankton 5-4 as
Anderson, Langland and Hildebrandt won in singles competition.

BHS GOLF…Brookings took part in Friday’s Huron Invitational boys’ golf tournament.

BHS SOCCER…Pierre posted shutouts over Brookings Friday night in varsity soccer action in Brookings.
   The Governors posted a 3-0 win in the boys’ match, while the Lady Govs picked up a 3-0 win.
   The Pierre J-V boys won 3-2 – Joey Kavanagh scored from Devon Hegdahl, and Cameron Eiseman scored unassisted.

BHS XC…The Brookings cross country teams opened the season Friday at the Sioux Falls O’Gorman meet.
   Three Bobcat girls ran varsity – Emily Berzonsky placed fifth, Haley Kindvall 11th and Emily Holm finished 26th.  Brandon Valley won the team title.
   The Bobcat boys were fifth with 66 points.  Patrick Chapin and Justice Lamer placed eighth and ninth to lead the team.  Justin Perry was 30th, Andre Jorgenson 32nd and John Olson 33rd.
   Graham DeHaven led the J-V boys with a 13th place finish.  Mirium Crinion led the J-V girls, placing 29th.
