MILES…South Dakota pole vaulter Derek Miles begins competition at the Olympics on Wednesday.
The University of South Dakota assistant track and field coach will be competing in the preliminaries in London. If he qualifies for the finals he will compete again on Friday.
The 39-year-old Miles is competing at the Olympics for a third time. He finished seventh in Athens, Greece, in 2004, and fourth in Beijing, China, in 2008.
SDSU FB…South Dakota State fall football camp is underway – head coach John Stiegelmeier wants his team to dismiss the past few seasons, and foucs on the present. 97621 :09 “with these guys”.
Stiegelmeier also wants the Jacks to master different things, before moving on. So far, that level of mastery’s been good. 97622 :26 “over the summer”.
Stiegelmeier says the Jackrabbit present includes solid offensive, and defensive, lines. 97623 :32 “good football players”.
Stiegelmeier says the Jacks have to stay healthy, and continue to mature.
NAIA FB POLL…The Dakotas are not well-represented in the NAIA football preseason poll.
Valley City State is ranked 17th coming into the season, on the heels of a 9-2 campaign last year. No other team in North Dakota or South Dakota made the Top 25 or even received votes in the coaches' poll.
Defending national champion Saint Xavier of Illinois is ranked No. 1, followed by Carroll of Montana, Marian of Indiana, Georgetown of Kentucky and MidAmerica Nazarene of Kansas.
NORTHERN SUN POLL…Northern State has been picked to finish 11th overall and fifth in the North Division in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Football Coaches Poll.
Defending conference co-champions Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State, both of whom advanced to the NCAA playoffs last season, finished 1-2 in the poll. The Bulldogs (217 points) garnered nine first place votes, while SCSU (211 points) picked up six.
Minnesota State, last season's Mineral Water Bowl participant, received the remaining first place vote and finished third with 197 points. Winona State (175 points) and Augustana (169 points) round out the top five.
UMD and SCSU also claimed the top two spots in the North Division Poll. The Bulldogs had five first place votes and 47 points in that poll, while the Huskies had the remaining three votes and 45 total points behind the divisional Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in Phillip Klaphake and Marvin Matthews, respectively.
Bemidji State (34 points), U-Mary (31 points) and NSU (28 points) round out the top five. NSIC newcomer Minot State edged out MSU Moorhead by a single point for sixth, while Minnesota, Crookston finished eighth.
AUGIE COACHES…Three-time All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team choice Tyler Schulte is returning to Augustana as an assistant football coach. He will work with the Viking receivers.
Head coach Mike Aldrich also announced the promotion of James Schrenk to full-time status as the recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach.
Gerald Davis has been elevated from volunteer assistant to graduate assistant. He will work with the offensive tackles.
