SUMMIT VB…South Dakota outside hitter Kendall Kritenbrink was named the Summit League’s Offensive Volleyball Player of the Week on Monday. South Dakota State libero Shay Birath was named the league’s defensive player of the week after the senior helped lead the Jackrabbits to a perfect 2-0 start in league play over the weekend.
For the week, Kritenbrink tallied 45 kills, six blocks, a service ace and an assist. She ranks first in the conference in points per set (4.9) and second in kills per set (4.25).
Birath collected 20 digs in the sweep of Omaha, then came back to tally 27 digs in a four-set victory over preseason favorite and 2011 league champion, North Dakota State. On the week, Birath recorded 47 digs, averaging 6.71 per set and eight assists.
WILLIAMS POW…Brookings Blizzard captain Thomas Williams has been named the NAHL Central Division player of the week. Williams recorded seven points in four games at the league showcase event, placing him third in the league in scoring after the first full week of play.
Williams is playing in his third season with the Blizzard organization and has been named team captain for the second straight season. His best game was on Wednesday when he scored a goal and had two assists in a 4-2 win over the Johnstown Tomahawks.
The Blizzard finished the weekend with a record of 3-1, falling to the still undefeated Wenatchee Wild 5-2 on Saturday.
PELINI HEALTH…Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says he has a "clean bill of health."
Pelini says he had an upset stomach before he was taken to a hospital by ambulance during the Cornhuskers' game against Arkansas State on Saturday. He was released late Saturday afternoon.
Pelini said, "I'm not just healthy. I'm very healthy."
The 44-year-old said he returned to work Sunday to break down film of Nebraska's 42-13 win over Arkansas State and to begin preparing for this week's game against Idaho State.
He said he has no heart problems or issues related to stress and that Saturday was "an isolated incident."
BIG 12 BORE…The Big 12's big bore is about to finally come to an end.
The league that dominated headlines for a variety of reasons during the offseason, not the least of which was whether it would continue to exist, has been a blip on the national radar once games finally started against a dismal lineup of non-conference weaklings.
That should change starting Saturday night.
Sixth-ranked Oklahoma plays No. 15 Kansas State in a game between two of the league's top teams, one that could go a long way toward determining who wins the conference title.
It's a far cry from the likes of James Madison, Western Illinois and Grambling State that the league's programs have been beating up the past few weeks.
