RUML… A Howard man had the opportunity to coach at this year’s Summer Olympics. Ken Ruml worked with the United States Olympic Wrestling team as they prepared for and competed in the London games.
Ruml retired two years ago after serving as a teacher and the head wrestling coach for 36 seasons.  However, he wasn’t ready to exit the sport of wrestling.  97624   :31   “in that field”.
Three styles of wrestling are recognized by the Olympics: Freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Women’s Freestyle. Ruml says countries in Eastern Europe and the Middle East have a greater advantage in international competition than the United States.
97625   :28   “on your feet”.
Jordan Burroughs and Jake Varner each won freestyle gold medals for the U-S, while Colman Scott won the bronze. Clarissa
Chun also became the first American to medal in women’s freestyle, claiming the bronze.
Ruml says it’s up in the air if he’ll coach the 2016 games in Rio De Janiero.  97626   :16   “stay involved”.
Ruml will coach at several events for USA Wrestling, including the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals November 3rd and 4th in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

McPHERSON… Olympic Taekwondo bronze medalist Paige McPherson says her recent trip to the 2012 games was an unforgettable experience.
The Sturgis native says her experience in London was surreal, and the warm welcome the athletes received was incredible.
97622   :29   “care of us”.
McPherson says the opening ceremony was an opportunity to see the other countries' athletes and gave her the chance to meet some other Team USA members like beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May Trainor and basketball medalist LeBron James.
McPherson, says she had more confidence entering the bronze medal match, after losing her second match.  97623   :24   “God, my country”.
McPherson will participate in the World Cup in two months and the World Championships next year. As for the Rio Olympics in four years, she says she will continue to train, and hope for the best.

VAN LEUR BACK TO SF… The Winnipeg Goldeyes have sent Brandon native Jack Van Leur back to the Sioux Falls Pheasants as his own player to be named later, completing the late-season trade between the two clubs.
Van Leur, a left-handed relief pitcher, departed for Winnipeg in mid-August after posting 39 appearances, a 3-1 record and a 3.78 ERA with Sioux Falls. He issued seven walks and 23 strikeouts. He was particularly adept at retiring left-handed hitters, who batted just .154 with just two extra-base hits against him.
With the Winnipeg Goldeyes, Van Leur went 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in 12 appearances in the regular season, and he helped the Goldeyes win the 2012 American Association championship.

USD BB COACH… The University of South Dakota will have another Williams in its basketball family.
Lloyd Williams, wife of new USD women’s basketball coach Amy Williams, says he was named an assistant with the Coyote men’s program.
Lloyd Williams resigned in July after spending one season as coach at Muskogee (Okla.) High School. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as head men’s coach at Rogers State University, an NAIA school in Oklahoma — the same school his wife coached at before coming to USD.
Before coming to Rogers State, Lloyd Williams was an assistant at the University of Texas-San Antonio for three seasons.

UNIQUE DOUBLE… All athletes strive for perfection, but they rarely achieve it.  Scott Larson, of Mitchell, did it twice in eight days.
On Sept. 9, Larson, who turns 50 next month, stepped up to Hole 8 at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell and used his pitching wedge to ace the 122-yard shot.
As an encore, Larson bowled a 300 game on Sept. 17 at Village Bowl in Mitchell.
Larson was less surprised by his 300 game, since it was the fifth he’s recorded. The hole-in-one was his first.
