Sheriff says deputy followed procedure in fatal Rapid City chase

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Pennington County sheriff says one of his deputies was following procedure when he chased a vehicle that ultimately caused a fatal crash.

Thirty-six-year-old Jimmy Pilcher, of Kyle, has a history of reckless driving and was being pursued by a deputy Friday night when his car ran a red light and was hit by another vehicle.

That driver's in critical condition and his passenger, 40-year-old Tamera Hunter, of Kyle, was killed.

Police say several others were injured and Pilcher is in critical condition.

Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom says deputies began pursuing Pilcher after a caller reported he was trying to run someone off the road.

Thom defended the pursuit after reviewing dashboard camera footage, saying the agency followed policy.
