The Jackrabbits (10-3, 2-0 Summit League) put up 17 shots in the win while limiting ORU (3-7-2) to 10 shots.

Leah Manuleleua paced the attack with her eighth goal of the year, matching Marisa Schulz with four shots. Karlee Manding added an assist.

Maggie Smither and the Jackrabbit defense turned in the team’s 10th shutout of the season, as Smither tallied six saves in a complete-game victory.

SDSU EQUESTRIAN…The South Dakota State Equestrian team held tough but fell in a close one to UT Martin 9-8.

The Jackrabbits drop to 0-3 on the season while UT Martin improves to 1-2 in what was the first conference meet of the season for each team.

SDSU kicked off the day with a 4-1 win in Fences behind an MOP ride from Claire Garduno, scoring an 83. Samantha Hunsecker used a re-ride to score a career-best 78 while Jessica Martinez (77) and Hayley Kastrup (76) also earned points.

Rylee Streit scored the lone point for the Jacks in Horsemanship with a career-best score of 74.5. Callyn Fox also scored a career best with her score of 73 while Kodi O’Boyle (73), Jordan Gates (71.5) and Emily Keiser (69) also rode in the event.

SDSU and UTM were closely matched in Reining with a pair of ties to keep the score close. Isabelle Riggs scored the only point of the event for the Jacks with a 70.5 while Cassandra Townsend (68.5) and Natalie Gydesen (70) forced ties.

Garduno put the Jacks on top 7-6 to start the final event with her ride of 71 on the Flat, but UTM pulled ahead with three straight points to make it 9-7. Martinez scored a 72 in the final ride of the day to earn a point and bring the meet to its final score of 9-8.

IVERSON AWARD…Longtime Brookings coach and educator John Iverson has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence by South Dakota State University. Iverson will be honored in conjunction with Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies Nov. 9.

A Brookings native, Iverson joined the Brookings School District in 1973, following his graduation from SDSU. He taught science and math at the middle and high schools for 33 years, while also coaching basketball, cross country and track and field.

Iverson served as a coach at Brookings High School for 90 sport seasons, likely positively influencing more student-athletes than any coach in the history of Bobcat sports. His coaching résumé includes 10 years as head cross country coach, 32 years as an assistant boys’ basketball coach, 22 years as an assistant girls’ basketball coach and 26 years as an assistant track and field coach.
