HURON, S.D. (AP) - Officials say attendance was better than expected at this year's South Dakota State Fair.
Despite the heat wave that hit during the annual fair's first three days, total attendance this year was the third highest ever recorded.
Total gate attendance this year was 183,005, down only 5 percent from last year's record.
State Fair Manager Jerome Hertel says many people visited the fair in Huron after temperatures cooled for the final two days. He says the number of exhibitors, vendors and campers exceeded last year's numbers.
The state Revenue Department says the five-day fair raised more than $148,000 in total tax revenue, up from about $143,500 last year.
