State warns of possible toxic algal bloom at Watertown's Pelican Lake

WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota's state environmental office is advising people about the water in Pelican Lake near Watertown because an algal bloom there may be toxic.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources says toxic algae can be fatal to anything that drinks water containing the algae.

The algae tend to release an extremely toxic substance during certain times of the year where water is stagnant, and the algae starts to die off and decay.

Dead birds and small animals have been noticed recently near the shores of Pelican Lake.
