MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) - Sen. John Thune isn't spending much of his
month-long Senate recess relaxing in his home state of South
Dakota.
The Mitchell Republic reports that Thune is part of a small
congressional delegation in Africa to check on activities by the
Department of Defense, Department of State and USAID.
The newspaper reports that Thune and the other delegates met
with U2 singer and activist Bono during a stop in Ghana. Bono is
one of the founders of ONE, an advocacy organization that fights
extreme poverty and preventable disease.
The six senators and one representative arrived in Africa last
Thursday and leave Friday.
While Thune's staff confirmed he is in Africa, they said they
have been advised not to reveal his location or exact travel plans
due to security reasons.
