Two people are injured when a motorcycle crashes while trying to elude
Brookings police.
Lt. Derrick Powers says an officer tried to stop the cycle for speeding shortly
after 12:30 Sunday morning. It accelerated into the downtown area. At one point,
at 4th and Main, a patrol car got in front of the cycle. It slowed nearly to a stop
and a female passenger tried to get off but ended up falling to the pavement.
The motorcycle continued on 4th to 12th Ave. and then to 7th, traveling at times
between 60 and 80 miles an hour. Powers says patrol cars involved in the
pursuit never went that fast.
At 7th and Faculty Drive, the motorcycle went out of control, hit the curb and
crashed.
The driver, 24-year-old Derek Zastrow of Gann Valley, South Dakota, was
injured and taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital and later transferred
to Sioux Falls. Zastrow was released over the weekend and charged with
eluding, driving under the influence and numerous traffic violations.
The 21-year-old female passenger is from Lesterville and had just met
Zastrow that night. After falling off, she made her way back downtown and was
later taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.
