Brookings National Guard Unit Activated

Brookings Area National Guard Unit, the 139th Brigade
Support Battalion will be activated Thursday.

The unit is made up of 64 soldiers that will be heading
to Fort Hood, Texas before its one-year deployment
to Iraq.

Unit Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Verchio
says half of the group has been deployed before and for
some it is their third or fourth time.

Verchio says their mission will be to supply other
units with equipment and other supplies to groups around
Iraq.

He says the activation ceremony is Thursday at 2
o'clock in the Performing Arts Center at South Dakota State
University.

Many will be in attendence including; the Governor, the Sergeant
General of South Dakota, Major General Timothy Rice, Brookings
Mayor Tim Reed, and other members of the National Guard.

The Ceremony will conclude with the South Dakota Highlanders
pipe and drum core.

The 139th brigade is made up of soldiers from Brookings,
Redfield, Miller, Mitchell, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls areas.
