The Brookings County Commission takes a couple of steps
towards solving their space needs.
The Court System is badly crowded -- something the Commission
has been trying to solve for years. They're building a joint
office building with the City and the Courthouse will be turned
over to the Court System.
On Tuesday, The Commission approved the rest of the phase
2 bids for the Government Center and approved hiring an
architect to come up with a Courthouse remodeling plan.
The second phase of the Joint Office Building is about
$200,000 under budget and the entire project is
nearly $1,000,000 under. Commissioners Deanna
Santema and Stephne Miller say they're happy with the budget.
Total cost of the building will be just under $9,000,000.
The cost of remodeling the Courthouse is one of the things to
be determined by Architecture, Incorporated out of Sioux Falls.
They're the firm the Commissioners hired.
Santema says this firm stood out because they understood that "we're
not rebuilding a Courthouse we're remodeling one."
Commission Assistant Stephanie Ellwein says they were looking
for specific expertise in the areas of working with a historic building,
working with the court system and working with county government.
The fees for the initial work are not to exceed $10,000.
