County May Charge Right of Way Fee

Utility companies are currently allowed to use the
rights of way in Brookings County free of charge. It
usually entails boring under or along a roadway to
run electric or other lines.

The free usage may change if County Commissioner
Don Larson has his way. He believes the utility
companies are infringing upon the highways and
says there should be some type of fee for the usage.

County Highway Superintendent Larry Jensen says
he's not aware of any county that charges a fee.

Commissioner Dennis Falken says it may be worth
exploring because it is a way to generate profit for the
County.

Jensen says he'll look into matter further.
