YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - Officials said Thursday that
sandbag-filling operations were suspended in Yankton after
volunteers, National Guard soldiers and inmates filled nearly
425,000 sandbags in 11 days.
Most of the sandbags went to Yankton residents whose property is
threatened by a rising Missouri River. About 100,000 filled sandbags
were kept in reserve.
Officials said the filling operation could resume if the reserve
supply dips too low or if there's a change in the flood threat.
The river level is rising because the Army Corps of Engineers is
releasing more water from Gavins Point Dam and other dams on the
Missouri River system.
