Faculty and staff at South Daktoa State University
are still dealing with the impact of nearly $4,000,000
in budget cuts.
The university announced the cuts in April to deal with
a 10% reduction in state funding. Programs are
being cut and 90 positions are being eliminated.
SDSU President David Chicoine says there are still some
adjustments going on and they will continue to work with
individuals that have been impacted by the cuts.
More cuts could be coming next year. Chicoine says the
national economy has slowed and it's an open question
on whether the state's economy will be robust enough
to fully fund higher education. He says the 3.5 million
dollars of stimulus money they had this year will disappear
for fiscal year 2013.
There may be another legislative session of difficult
decisions ahead with the economy being the way that it is.
He says he does not envy our Governor and our state legislators
as they look at the fiscal year for 2013.
Despite the cuts, signs point to enrollment growth
when students arrive this fall.
