Minnesota Students May Not Graduate Due to State-Mandated Tests

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Nearly 4,900 high school seniors might not
graduate in Minnesota because they haven't passed state-mandated
reading or writing tests.
That amounts to about 8 percent of all seniors tested. The
students are allowed to retake the tests after waiting six weeks. A
possible state government shutdown July 1 could complicate that
time schedule.
It's the second year the passing both tests has been a state
graduation requirement. The number of seniors that haven't done so
is similar to last year when nearly 4,800 hadn't passed either or
both tests.
State Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius says she's
frustrated and disappointed over the latest number. Cassellius is
critical of the slow pace of state student test score improvement.
