Runway realignment at the Brookings Airport could begin
in 2013.

Brookings City Manager Jeff Weldon updated the City Council
this week as part of his review of the city's capital improvement
plan. He says the airport fund has come into focus now that the
environmental assessment is completed.

Design work could begin yet this year. The City still needs to
acquire some property to accommodate the runway shift.

Weldon says the city will have to designate some funding
before construction work begins in 2013. The City will have to
come up with between $1 million and $1.5 million. He says
they have some major work ahead of them for the next couple
years.

Weldon says this will be a multi-year project. The estimated
total cost of the runway realignment is $19,000,000.
