Reasearchers Keeping Eye Out For Deer Ticks

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - Researchers are keeping an eye on South
Dakota's eastern border to see if a deer tick infesting Minnesota
is moving west.
The tick surveillance project is a collaboration between the
South Dakota Department of Health and South Dakota State
University.
Professor Michael Hildreth tells the Aberdeen American News that
researchers are monitoring several eastern South Dakota woodland
areas to search for the deer tick, which is a vector for Lyme
disease.
The deer tick is not commonly found in South Dakota.
The Health Department says that South Dakota in 2010 reported
one case of Lyme disease. Past cases in South Dakota have been from
ticks that people picked up out of state while traveling.
