Huron Names New Police Chief

HURON, S.D. (AP) - The city of Huron has named a new police
chief to replace one who resigned after making controversial
comments to a state Legislature committee.
Iowa native Gary Will Jr. has been the chief in Turner, Ore.,
for the past seven years. Will was among 12 people who
applied for the job formerly held by Doug Schmitt.
The City Commission put Schmitt on leave in March after he
testified before a state Senate committee considering illegal
immigration legislation. Schmitt testified that he thought two
businesses in the Huron area were employing illegal immigrants. He
resigned later that month after being with the Police Department
for 32 years and serving as chief for 10.
