Individual Flood Aid Possible in 10 Counties

Some federal help may be on the way to home and business
owners hit by flooding in 10 South Dakota counties.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency along with
state and local officials will begin preliminary damage
assessments on Monday.

It's a key step in determining if the state will pursue an
Individual Assistance Presidential Disaster Declaration.
The 10 counties are: Charles Mix, Clay, Day, Hamlin, Hand,
Hughes, Kingsbury, Stanley, Union and Yankton counties.

Ron Roth is an External Affairs Field Specialist with FEMA.
He says they are teaming up with the state and will have a list
to identify the sites they're going to review.

With public assistance, it comes down to the amount of
damage per capita. Roth says it's more subjective when it
comes to individual help.

The assessment will cover property hit by flooding from
Missouri River releases as well as lakes at historic
levels.

Roth encourages anyone with damaged property from
the 10 counties to let their County Emergency Manager know
so they can make a list of houses that need assesments
beforehand.

It will be up to the state to decide if an Individual
Assistance Declaration will be sought.
