State, Flandreau Tribe Agree on Gaming Lawsuit

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The state and the Flandreau Santee
Sioux Tribe announced Tuesday their agreement on a new gaming
compact, just days before the matter was set for trial in federal
court.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard's office said the agreement allows the
tribe to double the number of slot machines to 500 at its Royal
River Casino in Flandreau.
Federal law allows tribes to have the same kind of gambling that
is allowed elsewhere in the state after they negotiate a gaming
compact with the state. A lawsuit filed by the tribe in 2007 said
the state unfairly kept the tribe from adding slot machines.
Daugaard said in a statement that the agreement will help the
tribe compete with the recently opened Grand Falls Casino Resort
east of Sioux Falls at Larchwood, Iowa.
