Craig Smith at the County Commission Meeting
6/29/11
by Perry Miller
The State Department of Transportation is trying to determine
what to do with Highway 81. A section of the highway remains
flooded.
DOT Sioux Falls Area Engineer Craig Smith outlined options
at Tuesday's special meeting of the Brookings County Commission.
He says water from Twin Lakes continues to overtop the
roadway and would make travel nearly impossible this
winter.
Smith says they have three options. The preferred plan is to
pump the water into Lake Sinai. The other options are to close the
highway if they don't get the water clear before winter or raise the
grade.
He says the DOT has to come to Brookings County to get
permission to pump water from Twin Lakes into Sinai.
That section of road, south of Highway 14, has been raised
twice before.
