MADISON, S.D. (AP) - The Board of Regents on Wednesday gave
South Dakota's two largest universities approval to do preliminary
planning on the construction of new athletic facilities.
South Dakota State University wants to build a new football
stadium and an indoor multi-sports practice center.
The University of South Dakota wants to add an arena for
basketball and volleyball.
Both universities would need final approval from the board and
Legislature before construction could begin.
Regents Executive Director Jack Warner said the board expects
construction costs to come from donations and sponsorships. He said
operating costs would be covered by ticket sales and advertising.
SDSU's athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level. The
University of South Dakota's switch to Division I is effective in
fall 2012.
