The Southbrook Nature Park in Brookings will now feature a
Nature Center.
City Manager Jeff Weldon says that's thanks to an anonymous
$2 million donation. He says the Nature Center building will be
an educational and interpretive area for the facility.
A $1-million interpretive center has always been part of the master
plan for the park and the donation makes it possible.
In addition, the city has been awarded a second State
Game, Fish and Parks Grant to help build the main trail system
through the park. The $195,000 grant will be put to use in 2013.
The first grant, of $225,000 will go towards fishing piers, parking
areas and other amenities. That construction should begin later
this year. The Nature Center building should go up next year.
The $3.25 million dollar project is at the site of the former landfill
in southeast Brookings.
