The city of Brookings is awarded a grant to help with the
next stage in the airport renovation.
City Manager Jeff Weldon says the $342,000
Federal Aviation Adminsitration Grant is primarily for
design work.
The FAA wanted changes at the airport because of
buildings in the runway protection zone. The city chose
to realign runways at the existing airport -- a project
that is estimated to cost $19 million.
Weldon says a significant amount of the design work
will start in 2011, while the realignment work will begin
in 2013 and the stage 2 construction will take place in
2015.
He says they expect to receive other federal funding
at some point.
The grant will also help towards final costs of the
environmental assessment that was done prior to the
city proceeding with the plan.
