SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The Corps of Engineers is slowly
lowering water releases from some Missouri River dams in the
Dakotas.
Releases at Garrison Dam in North Dakota are being lowered from
140,000 cubic feet per second to 105,000 cfs by early August. U.S.
Geological Survey hydrologist Steven Robinson tells The Bismarck
Tribune that officials aren't sure how the flooding river will
react.
Downstream in South Dakota, flows also are being slowly reduced
from the Oahe and Big Bend dams. Corps spokeswoman Jody Farhat says
part of the reason is the "tremendous" amount of water downstream
in the Fort Randall Reservoir.
The corps says runoff into the Missouri River basin above Sioux
City, Iowa, in June was the highest for a single month since the
start of recordkeeping in 1898.
