PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - State and local officials met last week to
discuss preliminary plans on how to proceed with flooding cleanup
efforts.
But discussions are still ongoing and many questions still
remain, including when cleanup efforts can actually start, how long
it will last and what will happen to the estimated three million
sandbags that have been used.
Pierre Mayor Laurie Gill says that as long as water levels
remain high, the cleanup process can't begin.
For his part, Fort Pierre Mayor Sam Tidball says he does not
anticipate the work will be completed before winter.
While many people and groups came to Pierre-Fort Pierre to help
with preparations before the flooding, Tidball says the same sort
of outreach should not be expected during the cleanup and removal
of levees.
