PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A South Dakota legislative committee has
taken the first step in identifying some sales tax exemptions that
might be repealed in an effort to boost state revenue.
The Sales Tax Review Committee on Tuesday decided to look
further into whether advertising, agricultural fertilizer and parts
or repairs for farm machinery should be made subject to the sales
tax.
In informal votes, the panel decided to keep exemptions for many
other goods and services. Exemptions would remain in place for the
sale of livestock and livestock feed, seeds and health services.
The committee will make final recommendations on repealing tax
exemptions at meetings set for August and September.
Lawmakers say they hope to significantly boost state revenue by
making more goods and services subject to state sales tax.
