SD Mother of Slain Soldier Speaks

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota mother of a Fort
Carson, Colo., soldier who was killed in Afghanistan says Sgt. Lex
Lewis loved the Army life.
Betty Lewis of Rapid City says that her 40-year-old son played
at being a soldier when he was a little boy, and wanted to serve his
country. She says she's proud of him.
Lewis was a cavalry scout assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat
Team, part of Fort Carson's 4th Infantry Division. The military
says he was killed Friday when insurgents attacked his unit with
small-arms fire in Farah Province.
South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard issued a statement offering
his condolences.
