A Mitchell man is killed in a crash with a Dakota, Minnesota
and Eastern Railroad Train at a crossing on US Highway 14,
four miles west of Brookings.
It happened early Saturday. The South Dakota Highway
Patrol today says 25-year-old Catlin James Hemmah was
driving towards Brookings when his SUV hit the train as
it was crossing the highway. The vehicle caught fire.
It happened at about 4:50 A.M.
The patrol says the railroad crossing had functional
flashing red lights that were operating, but visibility at the
time of the crash was extremely limited by heavy fog.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
