Members of the South Dakota Army National Guard's 139th
Brigade Support Battalion depart Fort Hood, Texas, for a
one-year deployment to Iraq.

The 64 soldiers from the Brookings, Redfield, Watertown,
Miller, Mitchell, Rapid City and Sioux Falls areas left
Wednesday.

The unit's commander, Lt. Col. Anthony Verchio, says they'll
provide supply, maintenance and transportation support
to special operations units operating throughout
Iraq.

Verchio says they're looking forward to the challenge of
supplying these units throughout the entire theater. He says
they are a relatively small unit with a large area of
responsibility.

The 139th left Brookings on June 12th, and went to Fort Hood
to complete pre-mobilization training requirements.
