PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - An effort to honor South Dakota's past
governors with a trail of life-sized bronze statues kicks off in
Pierre Monday morning.
The Trail of Governors foundation wants to eventually connect
the state capitol and the Missouri River, with a minimum of three
statues erected each year.
The foundation is relying on private donations and corporate
underwriters to fund the project. Up to four sponsors are needed
for each governor's likeness.
The first three governors to be honored will be Arthur Mellette,
Harlan Bushfield and Michael Rounds. South Dakota artists have been
commissioned to create the statues.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard will speak about the project at 9 a.m.
Monday in the Capitol Rotunda.
