A Brookings Police car was hit in a Saturday evening accident
and the driver of the other vehicle is facing several charges.

The accident was investigated by the Brookings County
Sheriff's Department. They report it happened at the
intersection of 3rd street and Main Ave. at about 6:00 p.m.
Saturday.

An SUV making a right turn from Main hit the Brookings Police
car stopped at a red light on 3rd. The driver of the SUV --
22-year-old David Tilton, Jr. of Brookings -- admitted he
was texting while driving. The sheriff's office says Tilton was
also under the influence of alcohol.

The Brookings K-9 Unit was called in and several drug-related
items were found in the vehicle.

Tilton was arrested for careless driving, driving under the
influence, possession of marijuana, possession of drug
paraphernalia, ingesting a toxic substance and open container.

There were no injuries. The police car received about
$4500 damage.
