Rapid City Shooting

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard calls
the shooting of three Rapid City police officers and the killing of
one of them "a terrible thing" and says he'll be following the
investigation closely.
Mayor Sam Kooiker (KWAY'-kuhr) says that he knew the slain officer
and calls the killing of Officer James McCandless "surreal." He says
his focus will be on the officers' families and the healing of the community.
The officers were shot Tuesday after approaching four people at
an intersection whose behavior was deemed suspicious. The
28-year-old McCandless was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Twenty-seven-year-old Officer Nick Armstrong was critically
injured. The third officer who wasn't immediately identified was in
stable condition.
The suspect was shot and hospitalized. His name and condition
weren't immediately released.
