RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Hundreds of people turned out in Rapid
City for a candlelight vigil after three police officers were shot,
and one of them killed.
The crowd gathered Wednesday night at a church near the scene of
the Tuesday afternoon shooting that killed 28-year-old Officer
James Ryan McCandless and injured 27-year-old Officer Nick
Armstrong and 39-year-old Officer Tim Doyle.
People left candles, flowers and cards, and Mayor Sam Kooiker spoke,
calling for the community to pull together and rally around the
officers' families rather than seek to place blame for the
incident.
The alleged shooter, 22-year-old Daniel Tiger, died in a
hospital Wednesday afternoon. Some in the crowd Wednesday night
offered prayers for him.
