RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Rapid City Police Chief Steve Allender
says slain Officer Nick Armstrong was a hero twice.
Allender awarded Armstrong the Distinguished Service Cross and
Purple Heart medals in the hospital Saturday, a day before
Armstrong died of injuries he suffered in a shootout last Tuesday.
Allender says Armstrong became a hero again through organ
donations.
The 27-year-old Armstrong and 28-year-old Officer James Ryan
McCandless died of injuries after being shot while performing what
authorities have described as a routine stop. Thirty-nine-year-old
Officer Tim Doyle remains hospitalized. The alleged shooter was
shot by police and died the following day.
A funeral was held for McCandless on Sunday. Funeral
arrangements for Armstrong are pending.
