RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Rapid City police officer killed in the line of duty will be laid to rest Thursday.
Officer Nick Armstrong died Sunday at a Rapid City hospital, five days after he and two other officers were shot while performing a routine stop. Officer James Ryan McCandless also died in the shooting. Officer Tim Doyle was released from the hospital Tuesday.
A public viewing for the 27-year-old Armstrong is scheduled Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Barnett Arena in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, followed by the funeral at 11.
The Rapid City native was a two-year veteran of the department. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart medals for heroic action in the line of duty.
The suspect, 22-year-old Daniel Tiger, died one day after the shootings.
